AURN's annual SBN Sports Black College All-American Awards show celebrated its 40th anniversary this past weekend and was highlighted with a ceremony to honor the 2013 SBN Black College All American Team. The event was hosted by AURN Dir of News/Sports and Digital Services -- TY MILLER. Pres./Program Operations and Affiliates JERRY LOPES -- introduced the SBN All-American Team to the 400 plus guests in attendance. The event took place at the LOEWS HOTEL in ATLANTA.
Every member of the All-American Team was given a signature trophy and 4 special awards were handed out as well. SOUTHERN JAGUAR QB DRAY JOSEPH received the SBN/DOUG WILLIAMS Offensive Player of the Year award, SOUTH CAROLINA STATE linebacker JOE THOMAS got the SBN/MEL BLOUNT Defensive Player of the Year award, TENNESSEE STATE Head Coach ROD REED picked up the SBN/EDDIE ROBINSON Coach of the Year award ,and the TENNESSEE STATE TIGERS received the 2013 SBN/JAKE GAITHER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP trophy.
The festivities preceded the 5th Annual Enshrinement of the BCFHOF co-hosted by the NFL NETWORK's CHARLES DAVIS and STEVE WYCHE. AURN's Co-Chairman and Chairman of SHERIDAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION RON DAVENPORT SR.,--was given the BCFHOF Founders Award.This annual award is presented to an individual who has helped ensure the ascension and success of Black College Football and the BCFHOF.
The 2014 HALL OF FAME class included ROBERT BRAZILE/JACKSON STATE, LEROY KELLY/MORGAN STATE, Coach & Athletic Dir MARINO CASEM/ALCORN STATE & SOUTHERN, JOHN STALLWORTH/ALABAMA A& M, MICHAEL STRAHAN/TEXAS SOUTHERN, WILLIE TOTTEN/MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE, and DOUG WILKERSON/NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL.
A special skull session was also held during the weekend to give the 2013 All-Americans a chance to get advice from NFL HALL of FAMER's MEL BLOUNT, LARRY LITTLE, and JOHN STALLWORTH. BCC Honorary committee members and other NFL past and present players lending support included KENNY BURROUGH, JAMES HARRIS, BILLY "WHITE SHOES" JOHNSON, EDDIE ROBINSON JR., DOUG WILLIAMS, RICARDO LOCKETTE/SUPER BOWL CHAMPION SEATTLE SEAHAWKS, DOMINIQUE-ROGERS-CROMARTIE/DENVER BRONCOS, MARCUS BEARD/ARIZONA CARDINALS, ADRIAN HAMILTON/BALTIMORE RAVENS, QUINTON SPEARS/DALLAS COWBOYS, and CANADIAN Football's WILL FORD/WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS.
