CKMP Wakeup Duo Burns $5,000 In Radio Bit With Mixed Reaction

NEWCAP RADIO Top 40 CKMP (90.3 AMP RADIO)/CALGARY morning duo RYAN LINDSAY and KATIE SUMMER apparently have money to burn -- literally. THE DAILY MAIL reports the wakeup team, "are feeling the heat from some listeners after the pair burned $5,000 in a crematory as part of a contest. And although they are facing a backlash, another vote, this time with $10,000 on the line, happens MONDAY."

LINDSAY and SUMMER aired a contest called "Bank it or Burn it," in which listeners got to vote on whether a sum money should be burned or given away to a listener. Voting was done through text messaging, TWITTER, FACEBOOK or the station's mobile app.

Last week, 54% of those voting chose to burn $5,000 cash, so the pair "went to the PET HEAVEN CREMATORIUM & FUNERAL CHAPEL to carry out the vote. In a video that was posted on AMP Radio's website, the pair is seen in front of a table to with $5,000 in various combinations neatly arranged," adds THE DAILY MAIL.

"That's a half year's worth of mortgage payments right there,' SUMMER is heard saying.

The bit, however, isn't making some listeners happy. "As a person who has had moments in my life where I literally had to scrape change and pennies to buy milk for my son it kind of hit a nerve," AMP listener CANDACE ORTIZ told CTV News. 'I was raised to respect the value of money and to appreciate the good that it can do. It hurt me to see someone frivolously wasting something that could go to a better purpose."
