The annual PEW RESEARCH "State of the Media" report for 2014 was released TODAY (3/26), touting the explosion of digital news operations and expansion of sites like BUZZFEED and MASHABLE, with entrepreneurs investing in new and existing digital news operations.
On the radio side, PEW noted that traditional broadcast radio continued to reach the majority of Americans (2013's 91% unchanged from 2012), but that online listening "in the past week" is growing, up from 29% to 33% in a year, and that online listening in cars rose from 17% in 2012 to 21% in 2013. Podcasting, PEW said, has leveled off, slipping slightly from 29% to 27% saying they have "ever" listened to an audio podcast, and satellite radio was shown to have moderate subscriber growth. Revenues for AM and FM remained flat.
The majority of Americans say they get news in a digital format -- 82% said they got news on a computer and 54% said they get news on a mobile device; 35% said they get news "frequently" on their desktop or laptop, 21% on a mobile device.
