CONNOISSEUR MEDIA Rock WPLR/NEW HAVEN, CT and Classic Rock WFOX/STAMFORD-NORWALK, CT morning duo CHAZ & AJ played a prank on taxpayers on that “April Fooled” the entire state of CONNECTICUT and overwhelmed the DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE SERVICES (DRS).
All morning, CHAZ & AJ reported that CONNECTICUT state tax payers can double their tax rebate check from $55 to $110 by registering with a new database program instituted by the DRS. It was reported that taxpayers must register by APRIL 1st, 2014 by calling (203) 783-8306. The high volume of calls that came in ultimately caused the radio station’s phone system to crash.
"We didn't think it would generate that many calls, we are very surprised," says Chaz.
Once people called in, the message on the voice mail proclaimed that it was an APRIL FOOLS DAY joke. The DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE SERVICES were bombarded all morning with phone calls.
"We got a call from the GOVERNOR’s office shortly after 9a complaining that the revenue department was overwhelmed with phone calls,” stated CHAZ. “They weren't happy."
The joke was revealed at 9a but the station continued to get calls and questions about the rebate almost eight hours later.
