RECORD STORY DAY 2014 will offer 450 releases that will be sold at more than 2,000 record stores worldwide, KGW.COM reports. Among them will be exclusive vinyl releases such as four classic AEROSMITH reissues, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN's American Beauty, the GRATEFUL DEAD's Live at Hampton Coliseum and CAKE's vinyl box set, all of which feature previously unreleased material.
RECORD STORE DAY did record business last year, with sales of over more than 200,000 units, which was up 3% from 2012. It's one reason that, unlike declining CD sales, vinyl sales actually rose 32% last year, with 6 million records sold.
"It was dead when we started, and now the factories can't even meet the demand," Event co-founder MICHAEL KURTZ said. "It's just exploded. More stores are selling vinyls now and becoming even more a part of their neighborhood. That's the whole point of RECORD STORE DAY: to celebrate the connection that record stores have with their local neighborhood."
“Tomorrow’s RECORD STORE DAY is once again primed to be the biggest day of the year for independent music retailers," MUSIC BUSINESS ASSOCIATION Pres. JAMES DONIO said. "More than 2,000 stores in nine different countries are set to participate in the event, which will feature in-store performances and over 400 special releases from major artists such as ONE DIRECTION, who will release a special edition picture disc of Midnight Memories; JACK WHITE, who will attempt to break the record for fastest-released record with his live ‘Lazaretto’ vinyl; and PUBLIC ENEMY, whose CHUCK D is this year’s RECORD STORE DAY Ambassador. We here at MUSIC BIZ congratulate the organizers around the world for their incredible achievement. It is our pleasure to sponsor this event, which promotes the 1,000 independent retailers in the U.S. and the vital role they continue to play in their communities. Each year, RECORD STORE DAY communicates this message loud and clear. We look forward to many more to come.”
