HOWARD SMITH, the longtime influential "Scenes" columnist for the VILLAGE VOICE, an Oscar winning documentarian, and a weekend radio host at then-ABC Rock WABC-F/WPLJ/NEW YORK, died THURSDAY (5/1) at 77 of cancer.
SMITH won an Oscar as producer and director of the documentary "MARJOE," about young former evangelist (and later actor) MARJOE GORTNER and wrote his column for the VOICE in 1966-1980. His show on WABC-F ran in the late 1960s and early 1970s; the interviews from that show were released as a boxed set, "THE SMITH TAPES 1969-1972," last year, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for its packaging. Most recently, he worked with nonprofits like the MOOD DISORDERS SUPPORT GROUP in NEW YORK.
