EDM superstar DEADMAU5 has put out his own subscription-based music app for his hardcore fans, THE VERGE.COM reports. The new DEADMAU5 official app for iOS -- it'll be available for ANDROID in the near future -- costs fans $5 a month (or $45 a year) for exclusive music, videos and "dispatches on how his cat is doing."
DEADMAU5 (real name: JOEL THOMAS ZIMMERMAN) noted in a DECEMBER '13 REDDIT post that he'd had the idea "forever," and that "most publishers and labels are, still, completely overlooking the value of an artist-created/driven subscription model."
In fact, EDM artists have been testing the artist-driven subscription models for a while now. In 2012, TIËSTO launched his own app with subscription tiers for content in 2012, while SKRILLEX released his own subscription-based app for his label OWSLA.
