Is having a second job a conflict of interest for Talk hosts? An article in the ANCHORAGE DAILY NEWS looks at the local hosts whose low wages from radio -- generally $2,000-$3,000 per month and as little as $1,200 a month -- require them to take second jobs that might involve the issues on which they expound on the air, including MORRIS Talk KFQD-A-K279BG/ANCHORAGE's ETHAN BERKOWITZ and BERNADETTE WILSON, who work for consulting firms involved on opposite sides of the marijuana legalization initiative, and KFQD's DAVE STIEREN, who serves as a consultant to Senate candidate DAN SULLIVAN and has been accused of giving SULLIVAN favorable treatment on the air.
Everybody's gotta eat.
Also cited were ALASKA INTEGRATED MEDIA Talk KVNT-A (VALLEY NEWS TALK) host TOM ANDERSON, whose PR firm works with GOP Lieutenant Governor candidate LESIL MCGUIRE, and CLEAR CHANNEL Talk KENI-A host MIKE PORCARO, whose consulting firm works for oil companies and promoted a tax cut for the oil industry.
The hosts said that commenting on a topic with which the host is involved through his or her other job is permissible as long as the relationship is disclosed up front. PORCARO told the ADN that the second jobs are a consequence of working in ANCHORAGE, saying, "Everybody's gotta eat. I left radio because I was starting a family. And now my family's all grown, I can afford to go back into radio."
