According to a report to the PACIFICA National Board by Interim Executive Director BERNARD DUNCAN uncovered by RADIO INSIGHT, embattled noncommercial Variety WBAI/NEW YORK is in the process of being evicted from its transmitter site at the EMPIRE STATE BUILDING and is planning to move to 4 TIMES SQUARE.
The report indicates that the ESB returned rent payments for MAY and JUNE, "indicating an immediate eviction." DUNCAN said that a move to TIMES SQUARE would result in a "cost saving of almost two thirds."
The report also notes that radio veteran QUINCY MCCOY will take over as GM of PACIFICA's Variety KPFA/BERKELEY-SAN FRANCISCO as of JULY 7th, and that Variety WPFW/WASHINGTON is "working through union issues... and also legal issues related to the previous GM" and is considering relocation to 1990 K Street, where rent would be slightly higher than the station's current L Street location ($13,690 per month vs. $12,000) but almost $3,000 less than its previous location. And Variety KPFT/HOUSTON's license renewal is on hold while it remains on an STA; the STA is in place while the station tries to raise funds to replace its transmitter.
