The blog of technology analysis and consulting firm STRATEGIC ANALYTICS has some kind words for the traffic content of HUBBARD News WTOP/WASHINGTON after a ride-along with WTOP Traffic and Weather Director JIM BATTAGLIESE. STRATEGIC ANALYTICS' ROGER LANCTOT wrote that after the ride, he noted that while popular traffic app WAZE and GPS service TOMTOM failed to accurately identify local traffic conditions on the route, WTOP offered detailed, accurate conditions during the afternoon commute.
LANCTOT noted how BATTAGLIESE, coming upon traffic incidents, offered immediate assistance including parking the van with emergency lights flashing to protect the disabled vehicles, getting the information to the radio station for reporting, assessing the situation, and even directing traffic and briefing emergency responders as they arrived. His conclusion was that radio stations are often the first to report traffic incidents; WTOP, he noted, is looking at creating its own app to offer traffic information. "(C)rowd-sourced information is worthless without the interpretive genius of what JIM BATTAGLIESE calls a 'traffic geek,'" LANCTOT wrote.
