NPR, AMERICAN PUBLIC MEDIA, the EDUCATIONAL MEDIA FOUNDATION, and NEXTRADIO have launched a campaign and website to push consumers to tell wireless carriers to activate FM tuner chips in cell phones. The NAB is also listed in fine print on the site as a backer of the site.
"FREERADIOONMYPHONE.ORG" includes an explanation of why consumers should contact their carriers -- "For no additional cost, listeners could have easy access to radio for the entertainment they love and information they need, but wireless carriers are dragging their feet and won’t activate the FM chips that are in every smartphone" -- and news articles about the issue.
