WFUV Sports And News Departments Receive Awards

FORDHAM UNIVERSITY Triple A WFUV/NEW YORK is also a traning ground for students in the news and sports areas, and both departments were recently honored.
On the news side:
From the NEW YORK STATE BROADCASTERS ASSOCIATION and the NEW YORK PRESS CLUB, 2014 FORDHAM UNIVERSITY graduate BOBBY GUBIN won Best Feature for his piece, “I Am Somebody,” which addressed bullying and its negative effects through TY SMALLEY, an 11 year-old boy who took his own life after being provoked into a fight at school. From this tragedy, the “Stand for the Silent” initiative was born, reaching nearly 700,000 students in the U.S. and abroad. In total, Gubin received four awards for “I Am Somebody.”On the sports side:
ALEX SMITH, another recent FORDHAM graduate won three awards, including Best Sports News from the NEW YORK PRESS CLUB, for his piece, “Bob Costas: The Last Word” which lauded sports broadcaster Bob Costa -- a recipient of WFUV’s Vin Scully Lifetime Achievement Award for Sports Broadcasting.In addition, senior MIKE WATTS received the award for Best Coverage of a Local Sporting Event from the NEW YORK STATE BROADCASTERS ASSOCIATION for his reportage of the Fordham vs. Bucknell football game. And junior MATT MORO won Best Sportscast for “One on One Scoreboard.”
