Pew Study: 8% Of Dwindling Crew Of Statehouse Reporters Work For Radio

The PEW RESEARCH CENTER's census of AMERICA's disappearing statehouse reporters shows that radio represents 8% of the reporters assigned to statehouses nationwide.

A total of 1.592 reporters cover state government, 47% (741) on a full-time basis. Newspapers still have the largest share of statehouse reporters -- 604 total, 319 fulltime -- with television second, wire services third, and radio fourth (124 total, 68 fulltime).

The dwindling number of full-time reporters at a time when much of the important legislative action has moved from WASHINGTON to the state level concerns observers like reporter GARRY RAYNO of the MANCHESTER UNION-LEADER, who said, "“Anytime there are less people watching what’s going on, things are going to be slipping through the cracks.  Things that people should know are not getting reported.”
