CUMULUS News-Talk KKOB-A/ALBUQUERQUE weekend host TERRIE Q. SAYRE had the opportunity to be part of the final voyage of the USS ALBUQUERQUE in SAN DIEGO.
SAYRE, whose father was in the NAVY, wrote her impressions of the trip:
"The U.S.S. ALBUQUERQUE (SSN 706) has been in service 30+ years and is considered the 'Sure Shooter' of the submarine force. We were aboard for one of the last 'Distinguished Visitors' cruises before she is de-activated. She is a fast-attack, nuclear powered submarine. While aboard, we experienced 'a day in the life of' including dives to approx. 600 feet, sharp angle maneuvers, periscope viewing, cruising on the bridge while on the surface of the ocean, and a burial at sea including a 3 torpedo salute. Approx. 135 crew with Commander Troy Hesselink at the helm. It was an incredible experience which increased my respect for our Navy, helped me understand my dad's Naval submarine service in the late 40's and made me even more proud to be an American citizen."
