SONY has reintroduced the WALKMAN in JAPAN, the WALL STREET JOUNRAL reports. Unlike the portable cassette player that debuted 35 years ago, the ZX-1 is manually carved from a block of aluminum and sells for $700.
Aimed at high-end consumers, the ZX1 offers 128 gigabytes of storage for ultra-high-quality music files. Using expensive aluminum helps reduce noise. "The message for our designers and engineers was: please create a good product without worrying about the cost," SONY sound product planner KENJI NAKADA said.
The ZX1 quickly sold out after hitting Japanese stores in DECEMBER, yet SONY declined to give exact sales figures, prompting analysts to estimate sales of several thousand units in JAPAN.
In FEBRUARY, the ZX1 debuted in EUROPE and other parts of ASIA. No launch date in the U.S. has been announced.
