AMERICAN PUBLIC MEDIA "ON BEING" host and creator KRISTA TIPPETT and NPR "THE DIANE REHM SHOW" host DIANE REHM will be honored by President OBAMA MONDAY with the 2013 National Humanities Medal in a WHITE HOUSE ceremony.
REHM and TIPPETT are among nine recipients of the medal this year, including literary critic M.H. ABRAMS, architect JOHN PAUL JONES, filmmaker STANLEY NELSON, historians ANNE FIROR SCOTT, DARLENE CLARK HINE and DAVID BRION DAVIS, East Asian expert WILLIAM THEODORE DEBARY, and the AMERICAN ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY.
The WHITE HOUSE said that it is honoring REHM "for illuminating the people and stories behind the headlines. In probing interviews with pundits, poets, and Presidents, Ms. REHM’s incisive, confident, and curious voice has deepened our understanding of our communities and our culture." And TIPPETT is being honored "for thoughtfully delving into the mysteries of human existence. On the air and in print, Ms. TIPPETT avoids easy answers, embracing complexity and inviting people of all faiths, no faith, and every background to join the conversation."
