UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP has appointed JODY GERSON as Chairman/CEO of UNIVERSAL MUSIC PUBLISHING GROUP (UMPG), effective JANUARY 1st, 2015. GERSON, currently Co-Pres. of SONY/ATV PUBLISHING, will succeed ZACH HOROWITZ who has decided to step down to explore other opportunities.
“JODY GERSON is simply one of the best music publishers in the business, and we are thrilled that she will be bringing her creativity, savvy and vast experience to UMPG," UMG Chairman/CEO LUCIAN GRAINGE said. "JODY represents a new breed of music industry leadership, with a keen understanding of the evolving role of music publishers in the digital era and a track record of artist successes that places her among all-time greats. I’m excited for what we will accomplish together.”
“On behalf of everyone at the company, let me extend our profound gratitude to ZACH for his adept stewardship of UMPG and his decades of service to UMG," GRAINGE continued. "His versatility as an executive and leader is extremely rare and we wish him only the best.”
Zach Horowitz Departs
After close to 30 years with UNIVERSAL MUSIC PUBLISHING GROUP, ZACH HOROWITZ has stepped down as Chairman/CEO. HOROWITZ spent a dozen years as COO, and had been in his current role since APRIL, 2012.
“After a wonderful 30 years at UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP it is time for me to move on and explore other opportunities,” wrote HOROWITZ in an e-mail to staffers.
THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER notes, "HOROWITZ’s departure from UNIVERSAL marks the end of an era that began before the company even existed. An attorney, HOROWTIZ started his music industry career as a lawyer at CBS before becoming global head of business and legal affairs for MCA RECORDS. HOROWITZ was instrumental in growing MCA and was eventually named COO of MCA MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT. With the purchase of POLYGRAM in 1999, he was appointed Pres./COO of what then became UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP."
