FCC Commissioner AJIT PAI took his campaign for AM radio improvements to the OHIO ASSOCIATION OF BROADCASTERS, speaking to an "AM radio town hall" in COLUMBUS TODAY (8/13).
After joking about "our nation's most famous AM radio station: WKRP in Cincinnati" and recounting OHIO's AM radio history, PAI urged that "we should adopt the proposals the FCC outlined last year, with appropriate tweaks." He advocated an FM translator window for AM broadcasters, elimination of the "ratchet rule," and issuance of a public notice on AM proposals, and raised the ideas of eliminating skywave interference protection, allowing synchronous transmission using multiple transmitters on the same frequency, and the possibility of going all-digital on AM.
