News broke yesterday (8/16), nationwide, that TROY GENTRY of MONTGOMERY GENTRY, appeared in federal court in connection with killing a tame black bear. Federal officials said that GENTRY bought the bear, placed the bear in an enclosed pen, and then shot it. He later tagged the bear, as if he had shot it in the wild.
GENTRY, 39, made the appearance before a federal judge in DULUTH, MN. The appearance was in connection with a sealed indictment returned from a federal MINNEAPOLIS grand jury in JULY.
The government alleged that GENTRY tagged the bear, named 'CUBBY,' killed on a wildlife refuge, owned by LEE MARVIN GREENLY, 46, in 2004, with a MINNESOTA hunting license. He later registered the animal with the state Department of Natural Resources, as if it were killed from the wild. The false tag is in violation of federal laws.
This morning a press-release has been issued on GENTRY's behalf, saying that he has pleaded 'not-guilty' to the charge, continuing that he is an 'avid environmentalist and hunter who follows all game laws.' The statement also says that TROY, "absolutely denies that he knowingly and willfully did anything illegal."
