Longtime CUMULUS News KGO-A/SAN FRANCISCO midday talk host RONN OWENS has disclosed that he has been battling Parkinson's disease for over a decade. OWENS told the SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE's DAVID WIEGAND that he will tell listeners on TODAY's show about his diagnosis, which he said that he had kept quiet since 2001, because "one, I just cannot stand the thought of people feeling sorry for me. And the other, which is more of a factor with me, is that I don't want to be defined" by the disease.
OWENS said that the revelation after ROBIN WILLIAMS' death that the comedian/actor had been diagnosed with the disease was the catalyst for his own announcement. He added that although he thought when diagnosed, "Well, my life's over," he discovered that the disease can be managed, and said he is on a daily regimen of Stalevo and Sinemet to control the progress of the condition.
