CLAY TRAVIS has exited CUMULUS Sports WGFX (104.5 THE ZONE)/NASHVILLE's afternoon "3HL" show, and the split, TRAVIS writes in his "OUTKICK THE COVERAGE" FOXSPORTS.COM column, came over money.
TRAVIS wrote, "Six months ago I went to CUMULUS and told them it was my hope to continue doing 3HL for the foreseeable future. I told them that I didn't want to enter into protracted negotiations and wanted to continue to do radio in NASHVILLE. They knew my value on the open market because of past offers while I was under contract with them. It was simple: Could they be competitive with the market with my next deal?
"I expected that they would make a competitive offer and I'd continue to work at 3HL. After all, they were making millions of dollars a year and we were one of the anchors on the highest rated sports talk station in the country. For six months, CUMULUS did nothing after I made my overtures, this morning they finally made their offer -- a $5,000 raise.
"I thank CUMULUS for one thing, they made my decision to leave incredibly easy. If the company had been remotely competitive with its offer, I was inclined to stay. Instead of doing radio this fall, I'll spend my time writing on OUTKICK, doing television for FOX, and welcoming another baby boy to the TRAVIS household.
"After the first of the year, I'll make a decision on where to spend my radio future. The options will be good and for those of you who still want to hear me on radio, you'll be able to find me pretty easily."
