iBIQUITY DIGITAL CORP. has offered an update on the proliferation of HD RADIO in automobiles. Currently, nearly 20 million factory installed and aftermarket vehicles with HD RADIO receivers are on the road today, with an HD RADIO-equipped vehicle is sold in the U.S. every four seconds -- some 20,000 cars per day.
About half of the HD RADIO equipped models offer the digital radio platform as standard equipment. Over 185 different HD RADIO-equipped models are available in dealer’s showrooms with more than half selling for under $35,000 MSRP, and more than three-quarters for under $50,000. Close to 40% of all new cars sold in 2014 are expected to be delivered with factory-installed HD RADIO receivers. HD RADIO receivers are or will be available as a factory installed feature from 35 automotive brands.
The HD RADIO experience is being tapped by 15 automakers, including AUDI, BMW, BUICK, CHEVROLET, GMC, HONDA, HYUNDAI, KIA, LEXUS, MAZDA, MERCEDES, SUBARU, TESLA, TOYOTA, VW, as more than 1,100 digital channels now support the latest HD Radio Artist Experience feature, displaying images such as album cover art and station logos. VOLKSWAGEN is using station logos to identify AM and FM presets and SUBARU is displaying station logos on their station list.
HD RADIO traffic implementations are also growing. Five auto brands have launched vehicles with free-over-the-air traffic updates broadcast, fed by the CLEAR CHANNEL TOTAL TRAFFIC or the HERE and BROADCASTER TRAFFIC CONSORTIUM HD RADIO networks.
TOYOTA, LEXUS, HONDA, MAZDA and MITSUBISHI all have increased their sales of vehicles equipped with HD Radio traffic services, also providing additional information like weather, fuel prices, and headline news details to thousands of vehicles.
