ALL ACCESS sends condolences to the family and many friends of GRAND OLE OPRY star GEORGE HAMILTON IV. The performer passed away late YESTERDAY (9/17) afternoon surrounded by family at ST. THOMAS HOSPITAL in NASHVILLE after having suffered a serious heart attack on SATURDAY (9/13) that left him in critical condition. He was 77.
Known as "THE INTERNATIONAL AMBASSADOR OF COUNTRY MUSIC," HAMILTON IV traveled the world performing at international Country music festivals, including the first festivals in SWEDEN, FINLAND, HOLLAND, NORWAY, and GERMANY. He was the first artist to make the transition from Pop to Country music and toured with a diverse set of artists before racking up his string of Country music hits. He may be best known for his first #1 Country hit, "Abilene," which also landed him on the Pop charts.
HAMILTON IV had been an OPRY member since FEBRUARY 1960. Funeral arrangements are unconfirmed at this time.
