Urban Outfitters: Top vinyl retailer.

On the heels of this morning's RIAA MID-YEAR SHIPMENT STATISTICS, which showed vinyl up 43% over last year comes word that clothing retailer URBAN OUTFITTERS is the world's largest seller of the format.

According to a report in PASTE.COM, URBAN’s chief administrative officer CALVIN HOLLINGER told analysts they are “the world’s #1 vinyl seller.” HOLLINGER’s announcement follows declining sales reports and a line of controversial merchandise, such as JANUARY’s “depression” top and the KENT STATE sweatshirt with bullet-holes.

Along with vinyl albums, URBAN OUTFITTERS carry turntables and other audio accessories. HOLLINGER says the company's vinyl inventory is sold on commission..“Music is very, very important to the URBAN customer."

Vinyl’s resurgence started in 2007, with the launch of RECORD STORE DAY. For the first six months of this year, vinyl represented 16% of all physical shipments.
