The CRTC has announced that SHER-E-PUNJAB BROADCASTING INC. of RICHMOND, BC has reached a Consent Agreement with the agency and has been removed from having to appear before a WEDNESDAY hearing about the use of U.S.-based AM signals to reach the VANCOUVER market with Punjabi-language programming.
The notice did not disclose the terms of the settlement, and leaves RADIO INDIA (2003) LTD. of SURREY as the only broadcaster left from the original three that were summoned to the hearing to determine if they were violating Canadian law by using the American outlets to reach listeners and serve advertisers on the Canadian side of the border. A third company, RADIO PUNJAB LTD., settled earlier.
SHER-E-PUNJAB operates BBC BROADCASTING, INC. Ethnic KRPI-A/FERNDALE, WA under an LMA; that station is attempting against opposition from both sides of the border to move to POINT ROBERTS, WA, the town that abuts BRITISH COLUMBIA (and is only accessible via land to the rest of the U.S. by detouring across the border through B.C. and back). RADIO INDIA operates via MULTICULTURAL BROADCASTING Ethnic KVRI-A/BLAINE, WA, also under an LMA.
