JAMES CRYSTAL RADIO GROUP News/Talk/Sports WFTL-A (850) originated a live radio town hall broadcast about the growing concern over the lethal Ebola virus, from the campus of FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY. The event was hosted by the station's news anchor KAREN CURTIS along with world renowned Ebola expert Dr. AILEEN MARTY, Professor of Infectious Diseases at FIU.
KAREN and Dr. MARTY fielded questions from students at FIU's GRAHAM CENTER and callers from all over SOUTH FLORIDA about the deadly disease. A caller planning a visit to SOUTH AFRICA and ZIMBABWE asked if she should cancel her travel plans until the outbreak was brought under control. Citing more advanced containment protocols and distance from the outbreak zone, Dr. MARTY urged the caller not to "cancel your trip to those two beautiful countries." The recent case of a NEW YORK-based doctor who was diagnosed with Ebola following a visit to WEST AFRICA was topic of great concern.
Dr. MARTY also discussed available treatment options and called for more airport screening of people traveling from WEST AFRICA. "We really wanted to educate people about the disease and how it's spread and what the real risk is to our country from this outbreak," CURTIS said.
