COLUMBIA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY (CIU) Contemporary Christian WMHK (89.7)/COLUMBIA and WRCM (NEW LIFE 91.9)/CHARLOTTE continue to broadcast, with lawyers hammering out the details due to sale closing technicalities.
The two stations remained on local programming past the projected 5p ET WEDNESDAY deadline, as reported YESTERDAY (NET NEWS 12/17). WMHK and WRCM staff has been laid off, with a flip to the EMF BROADCASTING Contemporary Christian K-LOVE format expected as soon as the closing is finalized.
Much speculation has circulated about K-LOVE "taking over" these two local market stations, and the implications that are presented by such a presumed stance. But it should be known that K-LOVE's parent company, EDUCATIONAL MEDIA FOUNDATION (EMF), did not pursue these stations, and even originally turned down the offer to purchase from CIU. It was only when it became obvious that CIU had made the business decision to get out of the radio business, and definitely sell to someone, that EMF opted to make the purchase and keep Christian music programming in COLUMBIA and CHARLOTTE.
ALL ACCESS sends our thoughts and prayers out to the staff and family of both WMHK and WRCM, as they continue to seek their next opportunity.
