WBBM-A Adds Mark Grote To Chicago Cubs Broadcasts

CBS RADIO News/Talk WBBM-A/CHICAGIO has named MARK GROTE as the pre and post-game host for the CUBS radio broadcasts, the CHICAGO TRIBUNE reports. Grote also will provide scoring updates during games and will make regular appearances on sister Sports WSCR-A.

GROTE has been the scoreboard anchor for the "MULLY & HANLEY Show" on WSCR. He also co-hosts a SATURDAY morning show on the station with the TRIBUNE's STEVE ROSENBLOOM.

The CHICAGO TRIBUNE previously reported that WBBM Dir./News and Programming RON GLEASON received more than 400 resumes for the position, which JUDD SIROTT filled last year at WGN-A. More than a few were from people who admitted that their only qualification was being CUBS fans.

"I got a number of resumes from people who had absolutely no broadcast experience," GLEASON told the TRIBUNE. "They basically said they were lifetime CUBS fans who got an autograph from their favorite player when they were seven. Because of that, they are perfect for the job. I don't want to demean or make fun of them. These are wonderful people. But there is a skill and craft that goes into working in broadcasting."

GLEASON said he had at least 200 applicants who had the necessary broadcasting and baseball experience for the job, with "40 good enough to be WBBM and CUBS quality ... We have heard from virtually every minor league play-by-play man in AMERICA. They all are willing to give up play-by-play so they can do a pre- and postgame show. It shows how everyone wants to be in the major leagues and wants to be involved with the CUBS."
