CBC Announces Nationwide Job Cuts In Local News, 144 Positions Targeted

The CBC's English Services division announced TODAY (3/26) that it is cutting 144 positions nationwide in local news departments as part of the "2020" budget plan it announced last SUMMER. Some of the jobs will be cut by attrition or not filling open positions, and others will include layoffs or reassignment to the digital operations.
The cuts will include 37 in ALBERTA, 30 in ONTARIO, 25 in BRITISH COLUMBIA, 11 in SASKATCHEWAN, 11 in NOVA SCOTIA, nine in QUEBEC, seven in NEWFOUNDLAND and LABRADOR, five in YUKON, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES and NUNAVUT, four in NEW BRUNSWICK, three in MANITOBA, and two in PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND. The target savings level is C$15 million, with overall cuts expected to be between 1,000 and 1,500 jobs by the year 2020, 2/3 of which will be cut by the end of fiscal year 2015-16.
