Longtime Philadelphia Daily News Columnist, Former WIP Host Stan Hochman Dies At 86

Longtime PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS sports columnist STAN HOCHMAN passed away THURSDAY (4/9) after an undisclosed illness at 86, the newspaper reported TODAY.

HOCHMAN, who worked for the DAILY NEWS from 1959 until his death and covered practically all of the major sports events involving PHILADELPHIA teams and athletes in that time, including championships for the PHILLIES, FLYERS, SIXERS, and VILLANOVA, was a frequent presence on local sports radio, hosting a weekend show with fellow longtime local sportswriter RAY DIDINGER on CBS RADIO Sports WIP and frequently appearing on other shows, notably as the "Grand Imperial Poobah" on ANGELO CATALDI's morning show.  He also made a cameo appearance in the film "ROCKY V."  In the early 1960s, HOCHMAN did sports reports and panel shows for CBS' WCAU-A; he also regularly appeared on WPHT-A and as a panelist on COMCAST SPORTSNET/PHILADELPHIA's "DAILY NEWS LIVE."

A three-time PENNSYLVANIA Sportswriter of the Year and member of the PHILADELPHIA SPORTS HALL OF FAME, the PHILADELPHIA JEWISH SPORTS HALL OF FAME, the BROADCAST PIONEERS OF PHILADELPHIA HALL OF FAME, and the PENNSYLVANIA BOXING HALL OF FAME, HOCHMAN was to be inducted into the BIG 5 HALL OF FAME in a ceremony at the PALESTRA on APRIL 13th.  He was active until shortly before his passing, writing a column reviewing former NFL GM BILL POLIAN's book for FEBRUARY 16th's paper.
