RTDNA/Hofstra Study: Radio Newsrooms Even Less Likely To Be Buying Digital Tech This Year

The latest release from the annual RADIO TELEVISION DIGITAL NEWS ASSOCIATION-HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY survey of newsrooms looks at the adoption and use of digital technology, and of interest for radio is the statement that "(t)echnology shopping in radio has been plunging over the last several years, and the decline appears to be accelerating."
The percentage of radio news directors and GMs saying they'd be making no technology purchases in the next year has risen from 38% in 2012 to 44% in 2013 and 69.3% in 2014 all the way to 78.6% this year, cutting across all market sizes, geography, and commercial vs. non-commercial. Only radio newsrooms with 10 or more staffers -- which still showed 58% of managers saying they had no plans to buy anything new -- showed any likelihood to buy new tech.
As for those in the market for new technology, digital audio recorders lead the want list, followed by iPhones and tablets, internet-related and streaming products, and various studio equipment.
