APPLE's much hyped global radio station BEATS 1 will forgo traditional audio ads reports AD AGE, "but will instead feature spoken word sponsorships, delivered by DJs."
The station -- scheduled to debut TOMORROW (6/30) is billed as "radio like you've never imagined" -- will roll out with ELTON JOHN, PHARRELL WILLIAMS, DRAKE, JOSH HOMME, ST. VINCENT, JADEN SMITH and DISCLOSURE with their own radio shows when it launches. The BBC's ZANE LOWE will be the lead voice of the free online radio station, with two other primary presenters, including HOT 97 radio vet EBRO DARDEN in NEW YORK and JULIE ADENUGA in LONDON. The service was reportedly the brainchild of TRENT REZNOR, who has been very hands-on with its development.
Insiders told AD AGE that BEATS 1, "will feature what APPLE execs are describing in meetings with potential advertisers as 'audio mentions' that will be interspersed throughout the songs and segments that will air on BEATS 1."
