RTDNA/Hofstra Study: Radio Newsroom Employment Little Changed

More Survey Results

Continuing its weekly drip of information from its annual survey with HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY, the RADIO TELEVISION DIGITAL NEWS ASSOCIATION has released survey results regarding overall newsroom employment in 2014, showing little change, "as usual," for radio (up 0.4%), while TV news employment rose 1.1%.

As has been the case for over 20 years, the median radio news operation among the stations surveyed had one full-time staffer, with the typical radio news director overseeing the news on 2.4 stations with a median of 2.  Asked for the first time whether the station's news director was a full-time employee, 28.6% of stations answered no.  Noncommercial news departments remained bigger than their commercial counterparts by a 3:1 margin in full-time employment.

On the digital side, radio web staffing went down in full-timers, up slightly in part-timers, and overall fell 0.1%.  But radio news staff "helping" their websites jumped 14%, completely on the basis of increases at small and medium markets.
