Former FCC Chairman MICHAEL POWELL says that he never saw the localism study that a former Commission lawyer claims the FCC surpressed. POWELL told the ASSOCIATED PRESS through his assistant JUDY MANN that he "never saw the report, he never heard of the report until yesterday and he certainly never ordered anything destroyed or stopped."
A copy of the 2004 report, which the lawyer, ADAM CANDEUB, now a law professor at MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY, says was ordered destroyed by officials at the Commission, surfaced in Chairman KEVIN MARTIN's renomination hearing when Sen. BARBARA BOXER (D-CA) brandished it and demanded to know why it wasn't made public. The Commission's localism proceeding has yet to result in recommendations; POWELL, now a consultant, was the FCC Chairman when the proceeding was started.
