Twelve members of the Congressional Black Caucus have sent a letter to FCC Chairman TOM WHEELER asking him to restore the projected AM-licensee-only filing window for FM translators to the draft proposal for AM revitalization circulating among the Commissioners.
In the letter dated SEPTEMBER 2nd, the group notes that "AM radio is a crucial outlet for African American listeners to access the information and entertainment that is most relevant to their communities" and that AM stations face "certain economic and technical challenges" for which FM translator simulcasts are "the most promising mechanism" proposed in the AM revitalization proceeding. The letter asks WHEELER not to "reverse course" on the translator filing window.
The letter is signed by Reps. YVETTE D. CLARKE (D-NY), BOBBY L. RUSH (D-IL), G.K. BUTTERFIELD (D-NC), BRENDA L. LAWRENCE (D-MI), STACEY E. PLASKETT (D-VI, delegate), ELIJAH E. CUMMINGS (D-MD), ANDRÉ CARSON (D-IN), HAKEEM S. JEFFRIES (D-NY), DONALD M. PAYNE, JR. (D-NJ), KAREN BASS (D-CA), DAVID SCOTT (D-GA), and MARCIA FUDGE (D-OH).
