NEW YORK PUBLIC RADIO is launching a podcast division, WNYC STUDIOS, to develop new shows and also distribute them to other radio stations, reports the NEW YORK TIMES. The company has up to now been successful developing shows and podcasts for public radio through NPR and other distributors.
The new division opens this week and aims to raise $15 million (and has raised $2 million so far) for program development, including the previously-announced "THE NEW YORKER RADIO HOUR" (launching OCTOBER 24th as a podcast and in public radio syndication), a spinoff from "RADIOLAB" focusing on the SUPREME COURT, and MARY HARRIS' newly-launched health podcast "ONLY HUMAN." WNYC's current crop of podcasts includes "FREAKONOMICS RADIO," "DEATH, SEX AND MONEY," "NOTE TO SELF," and "HERE'S THE THING WITH ALEC BALDWIN"; new shows at the pilot stage include a show with VICE NEWS, a show with "THE DAILY SHOW" correspondent JESSICA WILLIAMS and PHOEBE ROBINSON, "TWO DOPE GIRLS," and a new scripted fiction series with comic SARA SCHAEFER, who hosts another improvised comedy podcast, "LIES WITH SARA SCHAEFER," produced by WNYC in conjunction with the NERDIST PODCAST NETWORK.
