DON PASSMAN's definitive music industry tome, "All You Need To Know About The Music Business," will see its ninth edition published NOVEMBER 10th by SIMON & SCHUSTER.
Known as one of the most influential and widely read texts in the music world, with 500,000 copies in print and a place on music-business syllabi around the country, PASSMAN has revised this newest edition of his "industry bible" with up-to-the-minute developments and trends to make it invaluable for newcomers as well as to the generation of industry professionals who've grown up with it. The new edition updates the latest information on how streaming services like SPOTIFY, PANDORA, APPLE MUSIC, YOUTUBE and SOUNDCLOUD have changed and continue to change revenues, A&R and royalties for the entire industry, as well as the surprising staying power of physical media.
When "All You Need To Know About The Music Business" was first published in 1991, one of the hot-button issues was which physical medium would reign supreme between tapes, videocassettes, CDs and Laser Discs. The book even covered "CDVs" - CDs with video. Vinyl was practically a dinosaur, and a big question on the horizon was what digital medium would be the household standard in music ownership. Almost 25 years later, in the digital age, the only physical media worth talking about is old: vinyl. Throughout the seismic changes in the music industry, PASSMAN's book has remained an industry staple.
The updated book features chapters on everything from how to pick a team, to royalties and record deals, co-publishing and copyright, songwriting and secondary publishing income. Some significant changes from the previous edition include:
*The latest developments in digital rights
*Digital streaming and changes to artist revenue streams
*Changes to label deals in the digital age
*The evolving role of the songwriter in published music.
