SETON HALL UNIVERSITY Rock WSOU (89.5 PIRATE RADIO)/SOUTH ORANGE, NJ, came home from the 2015 NATIONAL STUDENT ELECTRONIC MEDIA CONVENTION (NSEMC) in MINNEAPOLIS with first and third place awards in its back pocket, as well as multiple panel presentations given by WSOU staff members throughout the week.
WSOU Production Manager RYAN FLANNERY earned first place Best Play-by-Play honors for his call for a women’s basketball game against VILLANOVA. Fellow sports staff member HILL BOYCE was on color commentary for the game and also came home a first-place winner. In addition to the award for the best audio play-by-play, FLANNERY was named a third-place winner for a production piece promoting the NEXTRADIO app, which utilizes the FM chip in a smartphone. This award was a part of a nationwide contest for college radio students to write and produce a 60-second radio commercial for the app.
Seven WSOU student staff members were selected to present sessions at the convention, which is the nation’s largest gathering of students, faculty, advisers, and staff involved in college radio, TV, Internet, and converged media outlets. The topics WSOU staffers presented on included "Synergy Through Promotion," "Music And Programming," "College Sports Radio: Dos And Don’ts," and "News: Not Just A Stepping Stone," among others. WSOU GM MARK MABEN also presented three sessions, including "I’m In Charge, Now What?!" with station manager ERICA SZCZEPANIAK. To be selected to present a panel or session, WSOU staff members had to compete with individuals, including professionals, from all over the country.
“I felt incredibly honored to receive my awards, to represent WSOU on a national scale like was amazing and it felt right because of the hard work we put in as a group,” FLANNERY said. “The station has taught me to be a better broadcaster and I look forward to another great season of basketball ahead!”
Earlier in the month, WSOU was a finalist for three awards for CMJ, including Station of the Year. The OCTOBER 12th issue of RADIO INK magazine named WSOU GM MABEN one of the “30 Best Radio Managers” for 2015.
