MIAMI music and morning air personality LAZARO 'DJ LAZ' MENDEZ pleaded no contest to careless driving, which led to a boating accident fatality last year that killed a 23-year-old man (NET NEWS 5/6/2014). MENDEZ was not criminally charged in the incident, but he was given a citation, LOCAL10.COM reports.
Authorities said toxicology tests showed that MENDEZ had been drinking on the night of the accident, but FLORIDA FISH AND WILDLIFE officers did not see any signs of impairment and could not force him to submit to a sobriety test.
DJ LAZ, who was operating a vodka party boat whose propeller killed ERNESTO HERNANDEZ, will pay a $500 civil penalty, give a $1,000 donation to a beach restoration fund and serve 120 hours of community service. He is also required to take a boating safety course.
HERNANDEZ's family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against MENDEZ.
