DAVID BOWIE will reportedly be laid to rest not far from the SOHO NEW YORK apartment where he passed away and lived for the past 20 years, according to METRO.COM.UK.
The funeral is set to be a star-studded affair as famous faces from the music world will come together to pay tribute.
A memorial concert is planned for MARCH 31st at CARNEGIE HALL, which was originally slated as a tribute, including the likes of THE ROOTS, CYNDI LAUPER, THE MOUNTAIN GOATS, HEART's ANN WILSON, PERRY FARRELL, JAKOB DYLAN, BETTYE LAVETTE and ROBYN HITCHCOCK, with proceeds to benefit YOUNG AUDIENCES NEW YORK, LITTLE KIDS ROCK, CHURCH STREET SCHOOL OF MUSIC, THE CENTER FOR ARTS EDUCATION, the AMERICAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA and GRAMMY IN THE SCHOOLS.
A statement on the concert organizer’s website said: "The show is taking on many more emotions. RIP DAVID. "The unexpected death of DAVID BOWIE has turned this tribute, which we have worked on for the past seven months, into a memorial concert.
‘This year’s concert will certainly be remembered as a poignant celebration of his music by his friends, peers, and fans. We are all deeply saddened by this news. The timing of our public on-sale date is bizarre in its timing … may God’s love be with you.’
The tickets went on sale MONDAY as the news of his death broke and tickets sold out within minutes.
A TELEGRAPH UK report quoted BOWIE biographer WENDY LEIGH that the rock star had suffered six separate heart attacks over the past few years, all of which he had kept secret, along with the cancer diagnosis he reportedly received 18 months ago. IVO VAN HOVE, the BELGIAN theater director who worked with him on the NEW YORK THEATER WORSHOP production of "Lazarus," and was one of the few aware of his illness beforehand, told a DUTCH radio station that BOWIE suffered from liver cancer.
Meanwhile, sales of BOWIE albums, including his latest, "Blackstar," continue to dominate the online retail sites. Four singles, "Space Oddity," "Changes," "Let's Dance" and "Under Pressure" are in the Top 10 at iTUNES, while BOWIE has four of the Top 5 albums on AMAZON (with only ADELE the exception) and 12 of the Top 20. Early NIELSEN MUSIC reports have "Blackstar" debuting at #1 this FRIDAY, the first U.S. chart-topper in his career. His previous album, 2013's "The Next Day," was his highest ever, debuting at #2.
