ESPN is shutting down its MOBILE ESPN cell-phone service, discontinuing the troubled division as of DECEMBER 31. The service launched in test markets last OCTOBER and nationally in FEBRUARY 2006 and offered sports news, video-game highlights, and other material on branded handsets using network access from SPRINT, but it failed to catch on and was projected by MERRILL LYNCH to lose about $135 million in 2006. Instead of being a service provider, ESPN will now license its content as an application to other cell-phone carriers.
