The late PHILADELPHIA Rock air personality ED SCIAKY — credited with boosting the early careers of BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, DAVID BOWIE, BILLY JOEL, YES, GENESIS and others - topped this year’s class of "Asbury Angels" at the annual LIGHT OF DAY induction show during the just-completed LIGHT OF DAY WINTERFEST 2016 in ASBURY PARK, NJ.
SCIAKY, who rose to fame and acclaim as an air personaity on Rock WMMR/PHILADELPHIA in the 70s, was also heard on PHILLY Rock outlets WIOQ, WYSP and WMGK during his storied career. He was inducted as this year's "Guardian Angel" by TOM CUNNINGHAM, host of the Bruce Brunch radio program on TOWNSQUARE Classic Rock WCHR (105.7 THE HAWK)/MONMOUTH-OCEAN.
Other 2016 Asbury Angel inductees include sound engineer JULES AERTS, big band leader TOMMY TUCKER, ASBURY PARK CONVENTION HALL organist G. HOWARD SCOTT, nightclub owner MARGARET HOTAN and R&B singer HERBERT "TONY" MAPLES."
“The Guardian Angel is someone who did not live in or come from ASBURY PARK, but had a great influence on the scene,” said JEAN MIKLE, Asbury Angels board member and LIGHT OF DAY FOUNDATION board president. “ED SCIAKY's strong support of BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN helped establish him in the PHILADELPHIA market and gave a huge boost to his career. He was also a strong supporter of SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY AND THE ASBURY JUKES.”
Past guardian angels include Rock and Roll Hall of Fame record producer, civil rights activist and music critic JOHN HAMMOND, who signed SPRINGSTEEN to COLUMBIA RECORDS, and WALTER READE SR., theater mogul/developer of the ST. JAMES & PARAMOUNT THEATERS.
