U.S. Representative LAMAR SMITH (R-TX) has pulled the Copyright Modernization Act from legislation because he could see no way Congress could enact the bill into law during the remainder of the legislation. The act, which would give music companies and publishers the right to prevent the digital recording of individual songs from satellite radios and digital terrestrial radios unless broadcasters pay extra licensing fees, is expected to go back before Congress in 2007.
"My colleagues can be assured that I intend to move forward with this legislation in the next year and that I am confident that we will pass it then," SMITH, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet, and Intellectual Property, told the House Committee on the Judiciary.
