As IOWA caucused and NEW HAMPSHIRE prepares to vote, MEDIA MONITORS released an update on primary election radio advertising spending that looked at three IOWA markets and two NEW HAMPSHIRE markets.
In IOWA, measured by monitoring DES MOINES, QUAD CITIES, and OMAHA, CARLY FIORINA's Super PAC CARLY FOR AMERICA led with 1,435 spots in JANUARY, with BERNIE SANDERS buying 955 spots and HILLARY CLINTON third with 771 spots. Republican caucus winner TED CRUZ was next with 727 spots of his own, bolstered by 79 from the COURAGEOUS CONSERVATIVES PAC and 238 from the KEEP THE PROMISE I PAC; the total would have put CRUZ second only to FIORINO. DONALD TRUMP, the front-runner in polling but only second in the caucus, bought 509 spots; BEN CARSON bought 320 and was supported by 312 from his OUR CHILDREN'S FUTURE Super PAC. MIKE HUCKABEE's PURSUING AMERICA'S GREATNESS Super PAC ran 119 spots but could not prevent the candidate's falling out of the race; MARCO RUBIO, the third-place finisher, was supported by 74 spots from the CONSERVATIVE SOLUTIONS Super PAC.
Negative spots were also in evidence, with the OUR PRINCIPLES PAC leading that category with ads attacking TRUMP, followed by the ESA FUND against SANDERS, AMERICANS UNITED FOR VALUES against CRUZ, JEB BUSH's RIGHT TO RISE against RUBIO, PURSUING AMERICA'S GREATEST against CRUZ, and MAKE AMERICA AWESOME against TRUMP.
In NEW HAMPSHIRE, where MEDIA MONITORS checked PORTSMOUTH-DOVER and BOSTON radio, CLINTON bought 2,535 spots and SANDERS 2,211 ads. Well behind them in third place is TRUMP with 260, CONSERVATIVE SOLUTIONS supporting RUBIO with 253 spots, CRUZ with 240 of his own plus 87 from COURAGEOUS CONSERVATIVES and 76 from KEEP THE PROMISE, CHRIS CHRISTIE with 24 plus 233 from Super PAC AMERICA LEADS, and FIORINA's CARLY FOR AMERICA with 220 spots. Negative spots were also in abundance in NEW HAMPSHIRE, with RUBIO's CONSERVATIVE SOLUTIONS buying 524 anti-CHRISTIE spots and 30 anti-CRUZ spots; BUSH's RIGHT TO RISE bought 27 against RUBIO, while BUSH's own campaign bought no spots supporting its candidate in the focus markets.
