PATAPHYSICAL BROADCASTING FOUNDATION noncommercial Variety KUSP/SANTA CRUZ is on the financial ropes again, and its "Mayday Campaign" to raise funds by the end of APRIL to stay on the air failed to meet its goal.
The station had told listeners that it needed $800,000 to get to the point where it would be self-sufficient and aimed to raise $300,000 of that by the end of APRIL as a bridge to operate for the next six months, but only raised $110,000. "KUSP will operate the station at a bare minimum while the organization decides what to do next and can execute on whatever that plan winds up being," the station told listeners on its website after the campaign fell short. "We are leaving our website up for now, thanks to the generosity of CRUZIO. Take a look around, explore our archives, and stay tuned for what happens next with our signal."
The station dropped NPR programming in NOVEMBER and switched to a "music discovery" format, but says now that "losing NPR created a leaner financial reality than we anticipated, and which the Mayday campaign did not succeed in addressing adequately. We cannot afford our regular broadcast and still tend to the financial obligations that are now due."
