The latest release from the 2016 edition of the annual RADIO TELEVISION DIGITAL NEWS ASSOCIATION/HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY Newsroom Research Project looks at the business side of radio newsrooms, concluding that profitability has risen and websites are performing better but that nearly as many newsroom budgets went down as up.
The survey by Professor emeritus BOB PAPPER saw the percentage of respondents saying that their newsrooms showed a profit was at its highest in 5 years -- 25% -- while the percentage of those saying their operations were losing money was at its lowest in 10 years, 7%. (Note that the numbers are very variable year-to-year depending on how many and which stations return PAPPER's survey.) The percentage of radio websites showing a profit in the survey doubled from last year (8% to 15%) and now equals the percentage from two years ago.
