THE NORTH CAROLINA ASSOCIATION OF BROADCASTERS handed out their 2016 RADIO AWARDS last weekend, with GREATER MEDIA AC WLNK (THE LINK 107.9)/CHARLOTTE, BEASLEY BROADCAST GROUP Classic Rock WSFL (106.5)/NEW BERN, NC, and VILCOM INTERACTIVE MEDIA News/Talk WCHL (97.9)/CHAPEL HILL, NC, the big winners.
The North Carolina Association of Broadcasters (NCAB) recentlyWLNK was the recipient of NCAB’s award in the Large Market Category, collecting and distriburing over 200,000 bottles of water for victims of the SOUTH CAROLINA flood. PD/Brand Manager DARLA THOMAS accepted the award on behalf of the station.
WSFL received honors in the Medium Market Category, starting with legends JOHN BOY and BILLY, followed by CINDY MILLER and "Man Made Radio" with RHYAN JONES. General Manager BRUCE SIMEL accepted.
WCHL was the winner in the Non-Metro Category as the home of TAR HEEL Sports, producing over 6,240 stories, 3500 weather reports, 250 Hometown Heroes, 121 ball games and 600 weekly shows. Station Manager JAN BOLICK, along with several members of the WCHL staff, accepted the award on behalf of the station.
Winners in the Radio Personality or Team of the Year included "The 2 Guys Named CHRIS Show" on DICK BROADCASTING Classic Rock WKRR/GREENSBORO (Large Market Category); WSFL/NEW BERN, NC's RHYAN JONES (Medium Market Category); and WCHL/CHAPEL HILL's RON STUTTS (Small Market Category).
In addition, the NCAB honored four NORTH CAROLINA radio pioneers.
The HALL OF FAME AWARD went to the husband-and-wife power couple RICK and DEE RAY, who founded RAYCOM SPORTS, the nation's largest producer of live collegiate basketball and football events, producing more than 10,000 hours of live content, and ANN SELTMAN SMART, one of the first female radio personalities during the '50s.
The DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD was presented to the HONORABLE G.K. BUTTERFIELD, JR., the Congressman and former Superior Court Judge, who serves as a member of the influential Committee on Energy & Commerce as the 5th most senior Democrat on the Health Subcommittee, as well as CAROLINE BEASLEY, the CFO, EVP, Treasurer and Secretary at BEASLEY BROADCAST GROUP since 1994, and Interim CEO since MARCH.
