Famed Country Songwriter Freddy Powers Dies At Age 84

ALL ACCESS sends condolences to family and friends of Country songwriter/producer/musician FREDDY POWERS, who died YESTERDAY (6/21) after an extended battle with Parkinson's disease. He was 84. POWERS was a longtime friends and band mate of WILLIE NELSON, for whom he produced the 1981 album "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." He also wrote a string of hits for MERLE HAGGARD, who cut nearly 30 POWERS songs in total, and GEORGE JONES.

Other artists who cut POWERS-penned songs include RAY CHARLES, BIG & RICH, SUZY BOGGUSS, and STONEY LARUE. In the 90s, POWERS co-hosted a cable television talk show for the AUSTIN MUSIC NETWORK, which drew additional accolades. He release his own album, "The Country Jazz Singer," in 2000 before being diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2004. POWERS is survived by his wife, CATHERINE. A GOFUNDME campaign has been established to assist with funeral expenses.
