THE CONCLAVE LEARNING CONFERENCE continues in BLOOMINGTON, MN at the CROWNE PLAZA-MSP/MALL OF AMERICA hotel, with a full agenda TODAY (7/15).
An Award, Fast Advice, Getting Social, More Data
Opening with the presentation of the ROCKWELL AWARD to MIDWEST COMMUNICATIONS' DUKE WRIGHT, the FRIDAY schedule featured the annual Speed Mentoring session with top industry figures manning tables in the meeting room and offering advice to hopefuls. Next, a session on social media by marketing guru MICHAEL BRANDVOLD offered tips on developing and protecting a personal brand. Likening social media to a reality show, BRANDVOLD noted that "Everything you do builds your personal brand ... and your brand may be a little different from your employer's brand. He advised talent to know their boundaries and then "go for it ... push yourself, post anything you want." And he suggested that what followers want from the celebrities they follow on social media is recognition, and following a fan back may make a "fan for life."
FRED JACOBS gave the conference a rundown of TechSurvey 12, boiling the extensive survey down to several highlights on what changes have taken place in the media landscape and what radio listeners are into when they're not listening to AM/FM radio, including what "jobs" users are "hiring" radio to do, podcasting, cars, traffic reports, clock radio use, and video games.
PAIGE NIENABER of CPR PROMOTIONS and CAPITOL NASHVILLE's ANNIE SANDOR offered marketing ideas for stations on a budget, while a panel headed by DRAKE DONOVAN looked at how radio can use video, with DONOVAN attempting to crowdsource a video of the panel by asking everyone in the room to use their smartphones to shoot 90 seconds each of video in succession. And a talent panel moderated by TONY COLES closed the day with ENTERCOM Rock KISW/SEATTLE's B.J. SHEA and STEVE MIGS, iHEARTMEDIA Hot AC KTCZ (CITIES 97)/MINNEAPOLIS' GREG THUNDER, and CUMULUS Top 40 KRBE/HOUSTON's ROULA CHRISTIE and RYAN CHASE.
