ENTERCOM Sports WEEI-F/BOSTON has confirmed reports that longtime morning co-host JOHN DENNIS has stepped away from co-hosting "DENNIS AND CALLAHAN" on a full-time basis. DENNIS, co-host with BOSTON HERALD columnist GERRY CALLAHAN since 1997, is reducing his role with the station on advice of his doctors, the station announced TODAY (8/18). CALLAHAN and sidekick KIRK MINIHANE will continue with the morning show; rumors in the market speculated on friction between DENNIS and MINIHANE, whose role on the show has become more prominent since joining the morning crew in 2013.
ENTERCOM BOSTON VP/Market Manager PHIL ZACHARY said, “JOHN is a BOSTON radio icon and will remain an important part of the WEEI family going forward. To that end, we have been working with JOHN to define a new role for his considerable talents.” DENNIS, the station's release said, "will work with station advertisers, act as an ambassador to sponsors and community organizations, and occasionally host WEEI programs." ZACHARY added, “Most important to him is that JOHN will continue his compassionate work with our annual JIMMY FUND Radio-Telethon and will appear in our live broadcasts from FENWAY PARK, AUGUST 29 and 30.”
DENNIS said, “Pardon the cliché, but like most morning radio people, I’m really looking forward to finally sleeping in.”
